Data Layers

The data layers include crop vegetation and soil moisture data products and their derivative data products as well as auxiliary data layers, such as base map, CDL, Crop Mask, Water Layers, Road Layers, and various boundary layers.

Auxiliary Data Layers

Base Map

Global Land Cover is used as the base map, a visual background image. The Global Land Cover will not affect any calculations or analysis.

CDL

Cropland Data Layer (CDL) is for visual reference. It will not affect any calculations or analysis.

Crop Mask

The crop mask layer is generated from the most recent five years of Cropland Data Layers. It will not affect any calculations or analysis

Water Layers

The water layers include a) Rivers at the national and regional level; and b) Lakes at the national and regional level.

Road Layers

The road layers include a) National freeway system, b) Major highways at the regional level.

Boundary Layers

The boundary data are used for visual and analytical analysis of the targeted data layer for administrative region of interest. The boundary data sets are from the United States Census Bureau. They include administrative boundaries and their derivative boundaries:

  • CONUS County boundaries.

  • CONUS State boundaries.

  • NASS Regional Office boundaries.

  • CONUS Agricultural Statistics Districts (ASDs), consisting of neighboring counties.

Crop Vegetation and Soil Moisture Condition Layers

All data layer products for crop vegetation and soil moisture condition assessment are listed in the data catalog. The crop vegetation index data products currently include daily and weekly NDVI, weekly VCI, and MVCI. The soil moisture condition data products include top and sub SMAP level 4 soil moisture data products and their aggregated derivative data products. These data layers can be selected from the data catalog and loaded into the application for visualization and analysis as well as dissemination.

Crop Vegetation Index Data Products

The crop vegetation index data products include:

  • NDVI Products - Normalized Difference Vegetation Index Products - CROP-CASMA can provide daily and weekly NDVI products from 2000.

  • VCI Products - Vegetation Condition Index Products - Represent the weather condition or the vegetation condition. Currently CROP-CASMA can provide weekly VCI products from 2000.

  • MVCI Products - Mean Vegetation Condition Index Products - Represent the deviation of the vegetation to "normal" vegetation or multiple-year mean. Currently CROP-CASMA can provide on-demand weekly MVCI products from 2000.

Soil Moisture Data Products

This application disseminates the following NASA data products and their derivative data products.

  • NASA SMAP level 4 data including

- SMAPSurface 9km (every 3 hour)

- SMAPRootzone 9km (every 3 hour)

  • NASA SMAP level 4 derivative data products:

- SMAPSurface 9km (daily, weekly)

- SMAPRootzone 9km (daily, weekly)

- SMAPSurface 9km -- Anomaly (daily, weekly)

- SMAPRootzone 9km -- Anomaly (daily, weekly)

  • Categorized Soil Moisture Condition Data Converted from NASA SMAP level 4 derivative data products:

- SMAPSurface 9km -- Categorical (weekly)

- SMAPRootzone 9km -- Categorical (weekly)

  • NASA 1km High Resolution Soil Moisture data products Derived from SMAP, MODIS Land Surface Temperature and Soil Texture Data (NASA 1km SM Data):

- SM Surface 1km (weekly composite)

- SM Surface 1km (3day composite)

- SM Surface 1km (daily)
