This section describes individual application functions for visualization, analysis, and dissemination. All function icons are toggle buttons. Click a button to invoke the function and click it again to quit the function.
Left Toolbar
The Left Toolbar contains the major functionalities for data loading, data layer manipulation, data analysis, change analysis, map generation, and data downloading.
Catalog
The Catalog button is located on the left
toolbar. Clicking this button will pop-up a catalog window for data
layer selection. It allows for selection of data type, data repeat
period, temporal aggregate method, date (and time) for loading. The
catalog lists all daily and/or weekly crop vegetation index data
products NDVI, VCI, and MVCI, and soil moisture data products including
9km resolution top and sub SMAP level 4 soil moisture data products and
their aggregated derivative data products, 1km soil moisture data
derived from SMAP and MODIS land surface temperature data and soil
texture, as well as derivative data products: weekly soil moisture
anomaly data, and weekly crop soil moisture condition data categorized
based on NASS soil moisture conditions. The user may select any data set
to view, analyze or disseminate over this application from the catalog.
Layers
The Layers button is located on the left toolbar. Clicking it will
display all currently loaded data layer(s) for visualization, analysis
and dissemination. Top layer is the current data layer for display,
analysis and other operations. However, the layers can be dragged up and
down to change the current data layer for visualization and analysis
operation. Moreover, two icon buttons beside the layer name can be used
for layer control as follows:
Visual Toggle -- This icon is a toggle button and is highlighted by
default. This means the data layer is visible by default. Clicking it
turns the icon dark and disables its visibility. Clicking it again will
turn the visibility on again.
Remove -- Click this button to remove
the data layer.
Statistics
Statistics - This icon is located on the
left toolbar. It performs zonal statistics of a predefined area of
interest (AOI) and generates a table of pixel counts and acreage totals
for all categories within the AOI. The pop-up window has a tool bar on
the top, which displays the following function icons:
View Table - View table of statistics results in a separate window
Print - Print the statistics table
Export Table - Export the statistics table as a .csv file
Pie Chart - Display the statistics data in a pie chart
Bar Chart - Display the statistics data in a bar chart
PDF Map
PDF Map -- This button is part of the left toolbar. It creates a PDF map of the defined AOI of the top layer.
Change Analysis
Profile
Profile -- This button is located on the left toolbar. It profiles the
daily or weekly vegetation index NDVI, and 9km SMAP and 1km soil
moisture of a selected pixel location. The user needs to select a point
of interest using the AOI tool first and then click the Profile icon to
invoke the function to select the data type and date for profiling.
Swipe
Swipe - This button is located on the
left toolbar. Clicking this icon will pop-up a swipe control bar. Click
and
icons on the swipe control bar to select
two data layers for comparison. Move the green swipe control button
on the swipe control bar to swipe images
of two selected data layers for comparison.
Download
Download - This button is located at the
lower end of the left toolbar. Click this button to download the defined
area of interest of the top data layer. A dialog window will pop-up.
User may edit the output file name and path and click the "Save" button
to save the file.
Composite
Composite - This button is located at the
middle of the left toolbar. Clicking this button will pop-up a dialog
window. This function is to compute a composite layer from a set of
selected data layers from different dates. User may select one of three
original daily soil moisture data product types and select a set of
different dates in the dialog window. The purpose of this function is to
provide a tool for user to assess the soil moisture condition using
latest available data in the current period with an option to include
partial previous week data.
Animation
Animation - This button is located at
the lower end of the left toolbar. Clicking this button will pop-up an
animation control bar. The user needs to set the animation period by
clicking start and ending calendars on the animation bar. (The default

to load the data and play the animation.
The default data type to be animated is the currently loaded top data
layer. The animation bar has the following function buttons:
Calendar -- Calendar for setting animation period: starting and ending date, time.
Play -- Load data and play the animation.
Pause -- This is a toggle button to Play button. It will appear once the Play button
is clicked.
Speed-- Adjust animation speed.
Repeat Control -- This toggle button controls play mode. The animation play is defaulted to "Repeat" mode.
On the right of the animation bar, it displays the calendar of the animation period and the date of the currently displayed data layer.
AOI Toolbar
This toolbar includes all functions for defining an area of interest for data analysis. It includes selecting the existing administrative boundaries, drawing AOIs in different geometric shapes (rectangle, polygon, circle, freehand, and point), importing customer AOI, exporting the user defined AOI for later use, and remove the defined AOI.
Administrative boundary - Use this
tool
to define a specific state, county,
Agricultural Statistics District (ASD) or region as an area of interest.
Point-- Click the icon
to invoke this function. Then move the
mouse pointer to the point (pixel) of interest and click the mouse to
select the point.
Rectangle - Click the icon
to invoke this function. Left-click the mouse at the top left corner and
lower right corner to define rectangular area of interest.
Polygon - Click the icon
to invoke this function. Define a polygon area of interest by
left-clicking vertices sequentially around the polygon of interest.
Double-click the left button to deactivate polygon drawing.
Circular - Click to define center of
circle of interest and drag to define its size.
Freehand Polygon - Click the icon and move the mouse to the place
where you want to start drawing. Click and hold the left the mouse
button and move the mouse to draw the AOI.
Eraser - Click this icon to remove the defined area of interest.
